Hi Families of 3B!
I hope everyone had a great long weekend! We have new spelling words this week, P.O.W and M.M.
This week students are practicing adding 3 digit numbers using the expanded form strategy. Look for a note home on Tuesday to explain it, students should be able to show you how it is done! This is a great strategy for breaking down numbers into smaller parts and then adding together.
We are starting our new math unit this week, addition and subtraction. We will review basic strategies from last year (doubles, making ten, fact families) and then showing new strategies for adding and subtracting larger numbers. Every time we learn a new strategy, I will send it home with you, so you know how to practice/help your child at home! We learn many ways to add and subtract, that way your child can pick which way works best for them. The only way we DO NOT do, is the borrowing/carrying method that you may have learned growing up. If students come to me knowing it and can EXPLAIN why they carry, etc, I will let them use it as a strategy, but it is not one we teach. Studies show that it is mostly a memorization technique, a lot of students struggle with it and it does not help them do mental math (being able to do it in your heads).
Please check out the new spelling list and strategies under curriculum, under math you can find extra practice for both patterning and numbers to 1000. If you click under science, you can see models for the layers of the earth and some details on the 3 different kinds of rock.
Due to the overwhelming participation of our students in the floor hockey program, the dates needed to be rescheduled. This new schedule will allow our students to enjoy more time playing. Here are the new dates:

Grade 2: Nov 8th, Nov 29th, Jan 10th and Jan 30th
